A group of about 20 volunteers gathered at the historic Washoe City Cemetery to clear overgrown sagebrush and debris from graves and walkways, part of a community effort to restore the site.
The site holds significant historical value, with the earliest grave dating back to 1861, according to the Washoe City Cemetery website. Volunteers said that while progress was made, more work is needed to preserve and protect the area.
Organizers are now seeking additional support from the community, including donations of fencing materials to help rebuild the cemetery’s perimeter and contributions from local garden shops of wildflower seeds to enhance the grounds.
More volunteers are also needed to continue clearing brush and cleaning headstones. Another community cleanup event is planned for Sunday, April 12.
Those interested in volunteering or donating are encouraged to get involved as efforts continue to restore the historic cemetery.
