Nevada health officials want the federal government allow SNAP recipients to purchase hot prepared foods while prohibiting sugary drinks, energy drinks, and candy.
The Nevada Department of Human Services said the proposal, if approved by the USDA, could take effect in February 2028. Under current SNAP rules, recipients cannot buy items considered unhealthy, such as alcohol and cigarettes.
The proposed changes would expand restrictions to sugary beverages and candy, while also allowing items like rotisserie chickens. States including Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and West Virginia have already implemented similar measures in 2026.
