RENO, Nev. (Dec. 23, 2025) — Nevada officials say the U.S. Postal Service is not honoring its promise to maintain local mail processing in the state, after residents noticed postmarks from Sacramento on Carson City mail despite earlier assurances.
In August 2024, the USPS announced it would not ship Reno’s local, first-class mail processing to Sacramento following strong pushback from Nevada leaders and the public. At the time, the agency said “outgoing single-piece mail will continue to be processed at its current location” in Reno.
In response, a USPS spokesperson said the rerouting was due to a temporary breakdown of a mail processing machine in Reno. The agency described the move as a short-term “contingency plan” to ensure mail could be canceled and delivered without service disruptions.
State officials and residents remain skeptical, arguing that temporary workarounds risk undermining the USPS’s public assurances and could lead to delays, especially during winter, when travel over Sierra mountain passes can be hazardous.
Nevada’s senators are once again calling on the USPS to provide written confirmation that local mail processing will remain in Reno long term and that contingency measures will not quietly become permanent.
