Nevada Settles Emissions Fraud Allegations

CARSON CITY, Nev. (Dec. 23, 2025) — Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced a $150 million settlement with Mercedes-Benz, resolving allegations that the automaker engaged in emissions fraud by selling vehicles equipped with illegal emissions defeat devices.

Ford, joined by a coalition of 50 other attorneys general, said Mercedes-Benz violated Nevada laws prohibiting unfair or deceptive trade practices by marketing and selling diesel vehicles designed to circumvent emissions standards. According to the attorney general’s office, approximately 3,100 impacted automobiles were sold or registered in Nevada.

State officials said that between 2008 and 2016, Mercedes-Benz marketed and distributed more than 211,000 diesel passenger cars and vans nationwide equipped with software defeat devices. The software allegedly optimized emission controls during testing, while reducing those controls during normal driving conditions. As a result, the vehicles were able to emit nitrogen oxides at levels far exceeding legal limits, according to the coalition.
