RENO, Nev. (Dec. 19, 2025) — Two men were arrested Tuesday following a confrontation involving a firearm in the parking lot of Desert Skies Middle School, according to the Washoe County School District Police Department.
The incident occurred at the end of the school day on Dec. 16, when Humberto Mendoza Jr. parked his vehicle illegally in a parking space meant for drivers with disabilities. A second driver, identified as Pablo Calzada Moreno, confronted Mendoza, which escalated into an argument.
During the confrontation, police said Moreno pointed a firearm at Mendoza. Both men left the school campus and continued the dispute at another location.
Mendoza later returned to the school, where he was taken into custody by WCSD police. Moreno was arrested a short time later during a high-risk traffic stop on Pyramid Highway.
WCSD Police Chief Seana Baker said officers responded quickly to resolve the situation, stressing that bringing a weapon onto school property is a serious violation of Nevada law.
Families at Desert Skies Middle School received notification on Tuesday evening. There were no injuries reported, and the incident remained isolated to the individuals involved, with no ongoing threat to the school or community.
Mendoza is facing two misdemeanor counts of possession of a dangerous weapon on school or child care property. Moreno faces three felony counts of child abuse or neglect, two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one misdemeanor count of possession of a dangerous weapon on school or child care property.
The investigation remains ongoing.
