DMV Transactions Trigger Voter Verification Letters in Washoe County

Washoe County residents may have or will receive a notice from the Registrar of Voters asking them to review their voter registration information. The letters are part of a routine process that occurs when someone completes certain transactions at the DMV.

Those transactions can include renewing a driver’s license, changing an address, or registering a vehicle. When that happens, the DMV sends the updated information to the county’s Registrar of Voters.

The letter asks voters to review the information and confirm that it is correct. If everything listed is accurate, residents do not need to take any action.

However, if something has changed, such as a party affiliation or other personal information, voters can update it by filling out the included form and returning it. First-time voters who opted into registration through the DMV must also return the form to confirm they want to be registered.

About 20,000 letters were mailed to Washoe County residents. The mass mailing has prompted an increase in calls to the registrar’s office from residents asking whether the letters are legitimate.

Officials say the purpose is to ensure voter records are accurate so residents receive the correct sample ballots, mail-in ballots, and information about early voting and polling locations. The form also includes an option for recipients who wish to opt out of registering to vote.
