A Las Vegas man has been found guilty of making threats to kill and assault federal officials and state employees, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Prosecutors said Spencer Gear issued a series of threatening phone calls and emails between Nov. 30, 2023, and July 7, 2024. The threats targeted eight federal officials, including judges, as well as three state employees in Washington, D.C., New York, and Montana.
The DOJ stated the communications were to intimidate and interfere with the officials as they carried out their duties.
Gear received convictions on nine counts of threatening a federal official and 11 counts of transmitting a communication containing a threat to injure.
His sentencing is on June 1. Each count of threatening a federal official carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, while each count of transmitting a threat to injure carries a maximum of five years.
