U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed it will not conduct operations on Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal lands, according to Tribal Chairman Steven Wadsworth.
In a letter to community members on Monday, Wadsworth said he met with Nevada’s ICE Supervisory Agent, fellow Chairman Daryl Gardipe of the Reno Sparks Indian Colony, and other tribal officials to discuss agency operations.
Wadsworth said the ICE agent provided helpful explanations and that tribal leaders emphasized the importance of educating staff about which areas fall within Tribal Reservation boundaries. Officials also received briefings on various land additions to the reservation through the years.
The announcement follows a January 28 post by the Pyramid Lake Police Department, offering to escort tribal members to ensure their safety during interactions with ICE.
