A Montana woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly pointing a loaded gun at a Nevada state trooper during a traffic stop early Sunday morning.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) arrested 51-year-old Barbara Lu after Trooper K. Ducut fired a single shot at her vehicle. According to the LVMPD arrest report, the incident began when a trooper observed Lu run a red light at St. Rose Parkway and Interstate 15 and initiated a traffic stop.
The report states that the trooper detected the smell of alcohol and signs of impairment, prompting a request for Lu to exit the vehicle for field sobriety tests. Lu refused multiple times, leading the trooper to call for backup. When the trooper attempted to open the driver’s door, Lu’s medium-sized dog jumped out, attacking, before being called back into the car.
Ducut arrived and positioned his vehicle in front of Lu’s car. After repeated commands for her to exit, Lu allegedly pointed a 9mm Sig Sauer P938 handgun at his face, with a round chambered and her finger on the trigger.
Ducut drew his weapon and fired once, striking the driver’s side window. The bullet exited through the windshield, and though the shot missed, she sustained neck injuries from broken glass.
Following the shot, Lu opened the door, whereupon the troopers arrested her. She was treated at University Medical Center and remains in the Clark County Detention Center on $250,000 bail.
LVMPD confirmed the firearm contained one round in the chamber and two in the magazine.
Lu faces charges for assault on a protected person, resisting a public officer with a firearm, and three misdemeanors related to the traffic stop.
