A man accused of deliberately driving into four people outside a Safeway in Truckee is now facing multiple attempted murder charges, authorities said.
According to the Truckee Police Department, Jonathan Maurer is charged with eight counts of attempted murder in connection with the Feb. 7 incident. Maurer was initially arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury.
Police say the victims were parents and players associated with the 12-and-under Tahoe Titans baseball team. At the time of the incident, they were selling beef jerky outside the Safeway as part of a fundraising effort to help pay for a team trip to Cooperstown All-Star Village in New York.
All four individuals were injured when Maurer allegedly drove his truck into them. Authorities have not released updated information on the extent of their injuries, but confirmed that the case remains under active investigation.
The Truckee Police Department has not disclosed a motive for the alleged attack. Maurer remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system.
