Substitute Teacher Fired For Using Racial Slur

A Las Vegas substitute teacher is unemployed after a video surfaced showing her using a racial slur during a classroom discussion at Centennial High School last week. The Clark County School District confirmed the dismissal.

In an email to families, Centennial High Principal Keith Wipperman said the school’s “number one priority is providing a safe, learning environment for kids.”

The video shows students standing at the front of the classroom during a discussion when the substitute teacher interjected. “I want to know. I want to know why, when black people are amongst each other, they call each other [racial slur], and when a white person says it, it’s like ‘oh my God.’ It’s like an act of something, what is that?” she said.

Wipperman stated the substitute “engaged in a conversation with racial implications that was not conducive to the classroom environment” and confirmed, “the substitute is no longer an employee of the Clark County School District.”

Tracey Lewis of the Las Vegas Alliance of Black School Educators said the students’ response was appropriate. “Even these kids now are at a point where enough is enough,” Lewis said. “So, I commend the students for circulating the information, so that the appropriate adults could intervene and help them.”

This incident is part of a larger pattern at Centennial High. The school recorded 17 racially motivated incidents during the 2024-2025 school year, up from eight the previous year. As of December 1, 2025, there have been four reported incidents this school year.
