Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford filed a motion Wednesday to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the Trump Administration seeking access to the state’s voter registration data.
The U.S. Department of Justice, invoking Title 3 of the Civil Rights Act, asked a federal court to order the Nevada Secretary of State to turn over a copy of the state’s computerized voter registration list, which includes nearly 2.2 million voters. The DOJ argues that the data is needed to enforce federal voting laws.
Nevada officials have offered to provide a publicly available version of the voter list through standard channels but have refused to disclose information they consider sensitive, such as Social Security numbers, state ID numbers, or driver’s license information, without additional review.
In its motion, Nevada contends the DOJ is misinterpreting the law and has not fulfilled its obligation to provide a clear statement of the basis and purpose for requesting the records. Ford also cited federal privacy protections, including the Privacy Act, the E-Government Act, and the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, as reasons for limiting the release of sensitive voter information.
