Ex-Employee Sues County Over Alleged Retaliation

A child abuse case in Lyon County continues to unfold, now heading into the courtroom as a former county employee is claiming ‘wrongful termination’ after speaking out about the welfare of children.

The case began in 2024 when graphic photos surfaced showing unsanitary and unsafe conditions inside a Silver Springs home. Brittany Harrell, a child advocate with Lyon County Human Services at the time, shared the photos with local media, expressing frustration at what she viewed as a slow response by county and state officials.

“Somebody needs to get off their butt and do their jobs,” Harrell told KRNV during an interview in 2024.

Following the report, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation, and the children’s parents later pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse each.

Sheriff Brad Pope said at the time, “It was the first I’d heard of it, and we acted right away.”

However, Harrell lost her position with Human Services in July 2024, two months after the story aired. She has filed a lawsuit against Lyon County, claiming the action was in retaliation for going public with her claim.

Attorney Jeff Dickerson, representing Harrell, alleges the termination was motivated by her decision to give a television interview.

“We’re contending the motivation for it was speaking out to you and giving an interview to KRNV,” Dickerson said. He added that text messages from county supervisors urging Harrell to “rein it in” will be presented as evidence at trial.

Meanwhile, Lyon County has seen an increase in child abuse arrests since the original report. The trial begins on Tuesday, July 28, in Lyon County District Court.

Lyon County has not commented on the pending litigation.
