Inmate Booked on Felony After Overdose

Carson City, Nev. — An inmate at the Carson City Jail was treated for a suspected fentanyl overdose Saturday and later booked on a felony drug charge, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

The incident occurred inside the jail’s trustee pod. During a review of surveillance video, investigating deputies observed the inmate, identified as Brian Hofius-Ward, making what was described as an ingestion motion by placing his hands to his face. Shortly afterward, Hofius-Ward began showing signs of medical distress.

Video footage shows other inmates holding him upright as jail deputies responded to the pod. Carson City Fire Department personnel were called to the jail and administered liquid Narcan. Hofius-Ward regained consciousness and moved to the hospital.

While at the hospital, Hofius-Ward refused additional medical treatment and declined to provide blood or urine samples, according to the report.

Members of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team responded and searched the pod. Deputies located a white powdery substance on a tablet inside a bed area. The substance tested presumptively positive for fentanyl.

Following a review of the video evidence, the sheriff’s office obtained a warrant for a blood draw related to suspected internal possession. Hofius-Ward is charged with felony third-offense possession of a controlled substance.
