Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

Carson City, Nev. — A 58-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of felony carrying a concealed firearm without a permit and possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop in Carson City, according to a sheriff’s office report.

At approximately 1:05 a.m., a deputy was traveling northbound on College Parkway near East Nye Lane when he observed a vehicle with a non-functioning right brake light. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and contacted the driver, identified as Christopher Cain, explaining the reason for the stop and requesting his driver’s license.

During the contact, Cain placed his right hand into his jacket pocket. When asked by the deputy if he had any weapons in the vehicle, Cain stated he had a firearm in the pocket where his hand was. The deputy instructed him to remove his hand from the pocket, and Cain complied.

Cain told the deputy he was a registered gun owner. A records check through dispatch showed no outstanding warrants, but also indicated Cain did not have a valid concealed weapons permit, according to the report.

A second deputy arrived on scene and asked Cain to step out of the vehicle while keeping his hands visible. Deputies removed a black case from his jacket pocket and located a firearm, which was later confirmed to be clear through a records check.

After being taken into custody, deputies located a small pill identified as oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance, inside a silver container.
