Man Gets 167 Years for Reno Shooting

A man received 167 years in state prison for his role in a 2023 shooting at a north Reno apartment complex that left seven people injured, including three minors.

Frank Hewitt Jr. will be eligible for parole after serving 64 years in prison. A jury previously convicted him on seven counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, five counts of battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of battery with substantial bodily harm, two counts of child abuse with a deadly weapon, and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure.

Prosecutors said the shooting occurred on the night of October 6, 2023, at the Zephyr Pointe Apartments on North McCarran Boulevard near West 7th Street. Reno police responded to reports of gunfire around 10:45 p.m. after a disturbance involving a party in Building J.

According to investigators, officers arrived to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds and saw two masked men fleeing the scene and escaping in a vehicle.

Seven victims were throughout the building and transported to hospitals. Their injuries included wounds to the chest, legs, arms, hand, wrist, thigh, and foot. Among them were two 15-year-olds, two 18-year-olds, two 20-year-olds, and a 21-year-old. One victim suffered a chest wound with a bullet lodged near the lung.

Prosecutors said the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving a group attending a party. After some attendees briefly left for a nearby store, they returned to the apartment landing area where Hewitt and another man allegedly opened fire, discharging 32 rounds in two bursts before fleeing.

In a related development, Reno police arrested a second suspect in January 2026. Authorities identified him as 20-year-old Chemarion Cooks, who investigators arrested near South Los Altos Parkway and Vista Boulevard in Sparks. Cooks faces multiple counts, including attempted murder and child abuse with a deadly weapon. His case remains pending.
