A Henderson homeowner is suing after police allegedly destroyed his apartment during a 37-hour SWAT standoff in 2024 that ended with a wanted man dead, according to court filings.
The incident on Callen Falls Avenue near Galleria Drive and Water Street ended with 31-year-old Trevor Cooper found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police had responded on April 12, 2024, to serve Cooper with a warrant for kidnapping, battery, and drug-related charges. The situation escalated into a prolonged barricade that included exchanged gunfire between Cooper and officers. No officers were injured.
According to a civil lawsuit filed by property owner Aaron Baca, officers breached the residence, demolished part of the structure with an excavator, flooded the unit, and deployed chemical munitions, rendering the home uninhabitable. The lawsuit alleges police also refused a garage key fob and instead forced entry, causing additional damage.
Video from the scene showed heavy equipment tearing into parts of the home during the operation. The lawsuit seeks damages, including an estimated $418,000 in rebuilding costs.
