A fatal shooting at Elko Regional Airport on Monday involved a father killing his juvenile son before taking his own life, according to new information released by Elko police.
Officers responded around 12:30 p.m. to reports of an active shooter at the airport. Upon arrival, they found a man, later identified as Giovanni Perez, deceased near the airline ticket counter.
Bystanders directed officers to a restroom area, where they found a juvenile male, identified as Callan Perez, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital but later died.
Investigators determined the two were father and son traveling together after their rental car broke down outside Winnemucca. The pair had been towed to Elko and entered the airport to arrange alternate transportation.
Police said that inside the restroom, the elder Perez shot his son for reasons that remain under investigation. He then exited the restroom and died by suicide near the ticket counter.
The airport was closed following the incident, but reopened late Tuesday.
