The Reno Fire Department announced the retirement of K9 Boston, its first ignitable liquid detection dog, after five years of dedicated service.
Boston, a 6-year-old English black lab, joined the department in June 2021 after completing a 200-hour training course with Maine Specialty Dogs. Boston worked alongside his handler, Captain Sean O’Brien, assisting in more than 50 fire investigations across the city.
Trained to detect accelerants such as gasoline and kerosene, he was one of only two Main Specialty Dogs-trained K9s in Nevada, with the other based in the Las Vegas area. In addition to his investigative work, Boston participated in more than 50 community events and demonstrations, spreading awareness and education about fire safety.
RFD officials say Boston’s retirement will include enjoying treats, taking naps, and continuing to spend time with his human, Sean O’Brien.
