Nevada Leads Challenge to Federal Voter Verification Order

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford and Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar are spearheading a coalition of 22 states in a legal challenge aimed at blocking a recent federal order on voter verification. The states involved include California, Massachusetts, and Washington.

The order directs federal agencies to create a nationwide list of verified eligible voters, restricts the U.S. Postal Service from distributing absentee ballots to anyone not on approved lists, and imposes potential penalties or funding consequences for non-compliance. Officials from the coalition argue the order constitutes unconstitutional federal overreach, imposes an unfunded mandate, and could disrupt state election processes, particularly mail-in voting systems.

The state filed the lawsuit around April 4, 2026, and coverage and reactions to the case have continued through April 5–6.
