Man Arrested in Fatal Sun Valley Shooting

One person is dead, and a suspect is in custody following a shooting Saturday evening in Sun Valley, according to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 7:45 p.m. on April 4, 2026, to the 300 block of Brownlee Lane after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 68-year-old Kenneth Messerli of Sun Valley. Authorities said Messerli lived at the same residence as the victim and remained at the scene following the incident.

Messerli was taken into custody and booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a formal death investigation and will release the victim’s identity after next-of-kin notification.
