New COVID Variant Found in Nevada

A new COVID-19 variant known as BA.3.2, or “Cicada,” is spreading rapidly across the United States and has been identified in at least 25 states, including Nevada.

While there are no confirmed human cases in Nevada, the variant has been detected in the state’s wastewater, indicating it may already be circulating at low levels. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation as concerns grow about how the strain may behave.

The emergence of the new variant coincides with peak allergy season, creating confusion for some residents as symptoms overlap. Sneezing and runny eyes are common in both allergies and COVID-19.

Duration can also help distinguish between the two, with COVID-19 symptoms typically resolving within a couple of weeks, while allergies can persist throughout the season if left untreated.

Health officials continue to track the variant as more information becomes available.
