Freight Train Derailment Near USA Parkway

FEmergency crews responded Friday morning to a freight train derailment near USA Parkway. The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. on March 27 near mile marker 32.

Authorities say approximately 20 to 25 boxcars derailed, though some estimates place the number as high as 30. Photos from the scene show several rail cars tipped over along the roadway.

Despite the scale of the incident, officials confirmed there were no hazardous material spills and no injuries reported.

According to Union Pacific, cleanup efforts are underway. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

TMFR is leading the investigation, as the derailment occurred within Washoe County jurisdiction, with assistance from Storey County agencies.

Crews remain on scene to ensure public safety, monitor conditions, and assist railroad officials as they work to secure the area.

The incident is also impacting passenger rail service. Amtrak reported that California Zephyr Train 6 is delayed in Sacramento due to the derailment, warning passengers to expect a lengthy delay with no estimated departure time.
