Teen Killed, Man Injured in South Reno Shooting

Newly released court documents are shedding light on a deadly shooting at a south Reno apartment complex that left a 15-year-old boy dead and another man hospitalized.

Reno police say the shooting, which occurred just before 10 p.m. Friday at 1205 South Meadows Parkway, stemmed from a pre-arranged fight that escalated into gunfire.

Officers responding to reports of shots fired found the teenage victim dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. An adult male was also located and transported to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Authorities have not released the extent of his injuries.

Witnesses at the scene identified the suspected shooter as “Cameron,” leading officers to an apartment within the same complex. There, police located 18-year-old Cameron Wadsworth, whom they arrested without incident.

According to court documents, Wadsworth told officers he had a firearm in his room along with the clothing and shoes he wore during the incident. He later agreed to be interviewed at the Reno Police Department.

During the interview, Wadsworth told detectives the conflict began with a dispute involving his sister and another individual, who had agreed to a one-on-one fight. Both parties initially wanted their mothers present to prevent the situation from escalating, but plans changed when additional people attended.

Wadsworth told investigators he anticipated trouble, saying the situation was “shaping up to be a bad situation,” and armed himself beforehand.

He said the fight escalated beyond a one-on-one confrontation, claiming multiple people attacked his sister and that his mother was knocked down and overwhelmed. Wadsworth said he blacked out briefly and realized afterward that a shooting had occurred.

However, investigators say video evidence contradicts Wadsworth’s account. According to police, the footage shows his mother was not on the ground but was standing and attempting to break up the fight.

Detectives concluded the physical altercation, described as involving four women and two men, did not rise beyond a level that would justify deadly force. They allege Wadsworth escalated the situation by firing approximately seven to eight shots into the group without aiming, resulting in the teenager’s death and the injury of another man.

Detectives booked Wadsworth into the Washoe County Jail on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon. His bail hearing is tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

Friends of Wadsworth have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help defray legal expenses, asserting he was acting in defense of himself and his family.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information should contact the Reno Police Department’s non-emergency line at 775-334-2677 or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.
