Two Backcountry Rescues Made on Friday

Search and rescue crews responded to two separate backcountry incidents Friday, successfully locating and assisting individuals in remote areas of western Nevada and the eastern Sierra.

In Douglas County, the Search and Rescue Team located a missing person late Friday night after an hours-long search in the Pinenut Mountain area. Authorities say the individual had been missing since Thursday night and was riding a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV).

The search began around 2:30 p.m. on Friday and stretched across miles of rugged, rocky terrain. Crews ultimately found the person around 11:30 p.m. on a remote road.

According to officials, the individual was dehydrated, hungry, and exhausted but was treated at the scene and did not require further medical transport.

Meanwhile, in Mono County, a hiker had to be rescued Friday afternoon after becoming stuck on Mount Downs above June Lake.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team was alerted to the situation, making contact with the hiker by cell phone, allowing them to pinpoint the individual’s location on a rocky outcrop surrounded by snow.

Authorities deployed two teams. The first reached the hiker and determined they were not injured, while the second team worked to establish the safest route off the mountain.

Authorities later stated the hiker did not have the necessary experience or equipment for the climb.
