U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is among a group of Senate Democrats calling on the Department of Homeland Security to reduce delays in processing renewals under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Cortez Masto, along with Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin and 39 other Democrats, sent a letter to DHS and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services urging faster processing of DACA renewal applications.
The Senators highlighted that delays put recipients at heightened risk of detention and deportation, noting that as many as 270 DACA recipients have been detained and 174 deported due to expired protections.
They added that processing delays increase instability, causing recipients to lose employment authorization and jobs, disrupting workplaces, including health care, education, and small businesses, and creating financial instability for families, including the hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizen children with a parent protected by DACA.
The Senators urged DHS to reduce processing times for renewals and clear the backlog of pending applications to protect both recipients and the communities they serve.
