Man Arrested in Deadly Reno Shooting

A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting on Wednesday afternoon in northeast Reno, according to police.

Officers with the Reno Police Department responded around 4:30 p.m. on March 18 to the area of Montello Street and Oliver Avenue on a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found an adult victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Police say the suspect fled the area before officers arrived. Using a combination of witness interviews and investigative work, authorities developed a description of the suspect vehicle.

Analysts with RPD’s Real Time Intelligence Center, working with regional camera systems and partner agencies, tracked the vehicle as it traveled from Reno to Carson City and then into Incline Village.

A Washoe County Sheriff’s Office deputy located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in Incline Village. Members of the Regional Gang Unit responded and detained the suspect, later identified as Irving Cruz, 33.

Cruz was arrested and is facing a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon, police said.

The shooting prompted a temporary closure of Oliver Avenue between Montello Street and Desna Street as investigators processed the scene. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information should contact the Reno Police Department’s non-emergency line at 775-334-2121 or submit a tip through Secret Witness by calling or texting 775-322-4900 or online.
