The United Farm Workers announced this week that it will not participate in Cesar Chavez Day events in 2026 following the emergence of “deeply troubling allegations” regarding his behavior. The allegations include inappropriate sexual behavior or abuse, particularly claims that could include the abuse of young women or minors, with some references specifying “very young women or girls.”
While the union says it has no firsthand knowledge or direct reports, it called the allegations serious enough to warrant action. The UFW plans to establish an independent, confidential channel for anyone affected to come forward and seek support.
The announcement has already prompted changes locally. In Northern Nevada, the Central Labor Council confirmed it is renaming its annual Cesar Chavez Celebration.
The 2026 event will now be the Northern Nevada Member Assistance Program Solidarity Celebration Dinner and will proceed as scheduled on Friday, March 20, at the Grand Sierra Resort. Organizers said the change demonstrates solidarity with the UFW’s response.
