The Washoe County School District (WCSD) will soon begin searching for a new superintendent, marking yet another leadership transition for the state’s second-largest school system.
Superintendent Joe Ernst recently announced his retirement effective July 7, prompting the district to prepare for another change at the top of an organization that serves more than 60,000 students across Northern Nevada.
The upcoming search continues a pattern of turnover that has defined the superintendent’s office over much of the past decade.
Pedro Martinez served as superintendent from 2012 to 2014, leading the district for about two years before departing. Traci Davis followed, serving from 2015 to 2019.
Then Dr. Kristen McNeill stepped in as interim superintendent in 2019 and was later appointed to the permanent position in 2020, serving until 2022. She would later return in 2024 as interim superintendent while the district searched for its next permanent superintendent.
In 2022, the school board hired Dr. Susan Enfield to lead the district, who served roughly a year and a half before resigning in 2024. Following a national search, trustees appointed Ernst as superintendent in May 2024.
His retirement announcement means the district will soon undertake another superintendent search.
