Man Arrested in Carson City With Meth

A 57-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning in Carson City after deputies discovered more than 23 grams of suspected methamphetamine during a traffic stop.

Andrew John Grulick was booked on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a suspended license, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

It started around 9:19 a.m. when a deputy saw a vehicle traveling westbound on William Street at approximately 15 mph in a 35 mph zone. The slow speed caused traffic to back up behind the vehicle, with eight cars accumulating and traffic becoming impeded.

The vehicle then turned right onto Valley Street but failed to signal within 100 feet of the turn, causing the deputy and vehicles behind the patrol unit to brake. Due to the driving behavior and traffic violation, the deputy conducted a traffic stop on East John Street.

While speaking with the driver, the deputy reported seeing items commonly associated with narcotics use inside the vehicle, including butane torches and empty plastic baggies. Another deputy arrived on scene with a K9 to conduct an open-air sniff around the vehicle.

Deputies asked the driver to exit the vehicle. As he did so, the deputy observed him grab an item, fold it in his hand, and attempt to place it in his right pants pocket.

When asked what he was placing in his pocket, the man reportedly said it was “incense.” The deputy asked him to remove the items from his pocket, and the man produced a clear plastic baggie containing large crystalline shards.

The substance later weighed 23.4 grams, according to the report.

Grulick reported stating the substance was his “medicine” and “incense,” and claimed the Bible authorized him to use methamphetamine. He repeatedly referred to the suspected methamphetamine as medicine.

When asked how he smoked the “incense,” the man said he used a “harp.” The deputy clarified whether he meant a “burner,” a common term for a methamphetamine pipe, and the man reportedly confirmed that he did, adding that the pipe was in the vehicle’s center console

Dispatch also advised deputies that Grulick had a suspended driver’s license out of California. Deputies booked him on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance between 14 and 28 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a suspended license.
