Earthquake Recorded Near Beatty

A small earthquake was recorded near Beatty late Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 2.1 magnitude quake struck at about 10:15 p.m. The epicenter was located roughly 32 miles east-southeast of Beatty at a depth of about 5 miles.

The tremor is one of several recorded in the area over the past week. USGS data shows four earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater nearby during that time.

The largest was a 3.8 magnitude quake recorded east-southeast of Beatty on March 3. Other recent earthquakes included a 3.1 magnitude tremor in the same area on March 5, a 2.6 magnitude quake west of Indian Springs on March 4, and a 2.5 magnitude event east-southeast of Beatty on March 3.

The U.S. Geological Survey uses magnitude to measure the energy released at the source of an earthquake, replacing the older Richter scale. Quakes between magnitude 2.5 and 5.4 are often felt but rarely cause significant damage.
