Sparks Man Sentenced for Domestic Battery

A Sparks man has heading to jail in connection with a domestic battery incident that occurred in May 2024.

Cory Boteler received the maximum term of 180 days in the Washoe County Jail, suspended for up to two years. As part of his sentence, Boteler must serve two active days in jail, complete 48 hours of community service, and pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments. He is also required to pay a $35 domestic violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence classes, attend an eight-hour course on the effects of violence in the home, abstain from drugs and alcohol, obey all laws, and have no contact with the victim except to discuss matters related to child custody.

The charges stem from an incident on May 11, 2024, when Sparks Police officers responded to a residence on a report of a physical altercation between a husband and wife.

Officers learned that Boteler had placed his hands on the victim, identified as his wife, and that she had used pepper spray on him during the confrontation.

The victim told officers she had just finished her work shift when Boteler called her and began yelling. She began recording video on her cellphone before entering the home. Upon entering, she reported that her 7-year-old son told her, “Daddy said he’s going to beat you up.”

Police say an argument followed. During the dispute, Boteler allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife. When the victim asked why he had the knife, he responded, “Why? Are you scared?” and began stabbing a table, countertops, and a cutting board.

The victim told police she attempted to retreat to another room while Boteler continued yelling and lunging at her. She warned him she would use pepper spray if he continued. When he allegedly lunged again and wrapped his arms around her in an attempt to take her phone, she used the pepper spray.

Afterward, the victim gathered the children and went to a balcony while Boteler fled the scene before officers arrived.

Police attempted to contact Boteler by phone multiple times without success. He was arrested on Nov. 10 and later convicted on Jan. 13.
