Nevada State Fire Marshal Fired Following DUI Arrest

The Nevada Department of Public Safety has terminated Joseph Rodriguez from his position as Nevada State Fire Marshal following his recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The Nevada State Police confirmed Rodriguez’s employment as State Fire Marshal was terminated effective Feb. 25. He was on administrative suspension pending the outcome of a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office investigation and an internal administrative review.

Rodriguez was arrested at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Feb. 21 on suspicion of DUI, according to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said he was released from jail later that same day. A source familiar with the investigation stated the arrest happened on Pyramid Highway following a crash involving a state vehicle.

Two days after the arrest, Rodriguez appeared virtually at a Sparks City Council meeting without video and did not address the incident. He continues to serve as a Sparks city councilman, and it is unclear whether the arrest will affect his role with the city.

The City of Sparks states it is aware of the situation but would not comment on an active investigation.

Rodriguez was appointed State Fire Marshal last September after his predecessor retired. He previously served for over 11 years in the Nevada National Guard.
