A Nevada judge has ruled that a proposed ballot initiative seeking to limit transgender athletes to participating in sports based on their sex assigned at birth may move forward.
In the decision, the judge ordered that the initiative include a revised description clarifying that, if approved, it would create an exception to the Nevada Constitution’s existing equal rights protections, which guarantee equal rights regardless of gender identity.
Supporters of the measure may begin gathering signatures statewide once they fulfill all remaining legal review requirements.
The initiative would need to meet Nevada’s signature thresholds and other statutory requirements before it could qualify for the ballot.
