WINNEMUCCA, Nev. — A one-year-old child was hospitalized Tuesday evening after a reported fentanyl overdose in Winnemucca, prompting a multi-agency emergency response and leading to the arrest of the child’s mother, police said.

Winnemucca police officers were dispatched on the evening of Dec. 23 to an apartment in the Weso Street area after receiving a report of a child in medical distress. Detectives with the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team arrived first and administered naloxone before beginning CPR, according to authorities.

First responders rushed the child to Humboldt General Hospital for further treatment. The child’s current condition is unknown.

Police said that while emergency crews were assisting the child, the child’s mother fled the scene in a black sedan. Officers later located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield and led police on a pursuit.

The pursuit ended on Interstate 80 when the vehicle crashed into a tractor-trailer, authorities said. An ambulance took the driver to the hospital for treatment.

Police identified the driver as 31-year-old Lesley Keever of Winnemucca.

Following an investigation, Keever was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including evading a peace officer with disregard for safety, child abuse or neglect, use of a controlled substance in the presence of a child, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Winnemucca police say the investigation remains ongoing.
