WASHINGTON, D.C. — According to a recent national analysis by the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Nevada lawmakers enacted several gun safety measures in the years after the mass shooting on Oct. 1, 2017, in Las Vegas. However, additional legislative progress has largely stalled since then.

The Giffords report has released its annual scorecard, evaluating state gun laws and giving Nevada a grade of B- for the third consecutive year. Eighteen states received higher marks for the strength of their gun safety statutes.

Their analysis found that states with stronger gun laws typically experience lower gun death rates. In Nevada, gun-related deaths rose by 24 percent between 2014 and 2023, which was slower than the national increase of 33 percent during the same period.

Nevada ranks 15th in the nation for gun deaths, with a rate of 17.7 deaths per 100,000 residents. Suicides account for 68 percent of these deaths, while homicides make up 29 percent.
