• The Two-Tent Town That Built the City by the Bay

In June 1870, Dr. Pierson, in a letter to the Carson Tribune, vividly described the desolate beginnings of Virginia City. “I visited the spot known as Virginia and found not a house, but two tents in the ground,” he wrote.

Little did the men realize that beneath their feet lay unimaginable riches.

Carson rancher W.P. Morrison took an interest in the diggings in Gold Field. He pocketed some of what the miners deemed “that infernal blue stuff,” a worthless, blue-tinted ore that hindered gold mining operations.

Several months later, Morrison had the ore assayed in Grass Valley, Cal. What he discovered there would send shockwaves around the world. The sample contained not only gold but twice as much silver as gold. J.J. Ott, the assayer, estimated the ore’s value at an astounding $4971.00 per ton.

Reporter William Wright, known by his pen name Dan DeQuille, took up the narrative.

“The excitement by no means abated when [the assayer] was informed by Mr. Morrison that there was tone and tons of the same stuff just laying in plain sight,” Dequille recounted.

To keep the discovery a secret, Morrison and Ott made plans to secure as much mining ground as possible across the Sierra. The news of this remarkable find spread like wildfire, and by 9 a.m. the following morning, word had spread like wildfire, reaching the far corners of Grass Valley. Even Judge Walsh, the local barrister, closed shop and prepared to journey to the Nevada Territory.

Within days, a deluge of miners had abandoned their California diggings and flocked to the silver-laden hills of Nevada. Carrying their possessions on their backs or relying on whatever transportation they could find, they embarked for the silver fields.

“The handful of old settlers found themselves strangers in their own land and their own dwellings in a single day,” wrote DeQuille, poignantly capturing the overwhelming influx of miners that transformed Virginia City overnight.

Once barren and forsaken, the mountainside became a hotbed of activity as miners scrambled to claim their share of the abundant silver. The ensuing silver rush would forever change the destiny of Virginia City and propel the tiny port of San Francisco into becoming the financial capital of the West.

  • Nine Years Later: The Battle at Bunkerville

Newly released documents authored by Larry Wooten, a former Special Agent with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM,) show how the federal government illegally spied on and entrapped citizens during the 2014 “Bundy Ranch Standoff,” and while imprisoned defendants were on trial.

In 2017 Wooten sent an 18-page whistleblower document to Washington State Representative Matt Shea chronicling “a widespread pattern of bad judgment, lack of discipline, incredible bias, unprofessionalism and misconduct, as well as likely policy, ethical, and legal violations among senior and supervisory staff at the BLM’s Office of Law Enforcement and Security.”

The report directly led to the dismissal of the case against Cliven and Ammon Bundy and several people involved with the 2014 standoff because BLM and FBI agents “shredded documents at dispatch,” withheld “texts and emails that make officers look unprofessional,” and omitted evidence during the trial that proved the innocence of the Bundy family and their supporters.

At the time of the first documents release, The Oregonian reported that: “Wooten accused Dan Love, the former special agent-in-charge of the cattle roundup for the Bureau of Land Management, of intentionally ignoring direction from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and his Superiors ‘to command the most intrusive, oppressive, large scale and militaristic trespass cattle impound possible.’”

Wooten said he learned from other agency supervisors that “Love had a ‘Kill Book’ as a ‘trophy,’ which he bragged about ‘getting three individuals in Utah to commit suicide,’ following a joint FBI-BLM investigation…”

Press reports at the time detailed how Love referred to the Bundys as “retards,” “red-necks,” “douche bags,” “tractor-face,” “idiots,” “in-bred,” and that he “sent photographs of his own feces and his girlfriends’ vagina to coworkers and subordinates. It was also reported by another BLM SAC that former BLM SAC Dan Love told him that there is “no way he gets more pu$$y [sic] than him.”

Now, thanks to a recently released FOIA request made by Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch Inc., 252 new pages of the Wooten whistleblower document and testimony are public.

Called Wooten-II, it expands on allegations made in his 18-page memo detailing tactics used not only against Bundy Ranch protestors but also outlines the ongoing warrantless “military style” surveillance operations and “social media misinformation campaigns” being conducted by the Federal Government against U.S. Citizens.

Wooten details the events leading up to the “vast aggressive militaristic trespass cattle impound operation led by former BLM [Special Agent Dan Love].”

Wooten continues: ”an extensive social media BLM misinformation campaign directed by [Redacted] that seemed to have the effect of aggravating the public sentiment.”

Wooten says, “This misinformation campaign was similar to a military operation and intelligence gathering operation and was in regard to constitutionally protected 1st Amendment activities and akin to the ‘intelligence preparation of the battlefield.’ The FBI couldn’t specifically participate in intelligence gathering activities, but I remember after the 2014 Trespass Cattle Impound, but before the arrest operation, this intelligence gathering, generally over social media using undercover accounts and open monitoring was directed by [Love] and conducted by a newly formed BLM unit called the “Threat Mitigation Unit” (TMU) commanded also again by former BLM [Love]. This activity, which was evidently prohibited by FBI policy, was allowed and conducted in the absence of a specific BLM policy, in essence by using a directed loophole to conduct the electronic surveillance and monitoring.”

Independent journalist and podcaster Pete Santilli obtained corroborating documentation detailing the theft and killing of the Bundy cattle. One of these “misinformation campaigns” specifically targeted Cliven Bundy’s daughter Bailey to egg the Bundy family on to a confrontation with Federal Agents.

In a series of text messages by Santilli that were sent to Bailey between March and April 2014 by a Federal Agent named Alex Branson under the pseudonym “Robyn Kirkum.”

The text messages say: “My friends said they saw some of you guys out there at the ‘command Post’ or whatever the Feds call their camp site. I hope you guys were giving them some hell. This is crazy. You’d think they were taking down some heavily armed cult that was enslaving children and making drugs.”

Another message attempted to get Bailey to begin posting photos of an armored vehicle to rile up protestors: “Not sure if this sounds crazy, but my Vegas friend said the FBI has a large armored vehicle (he used some acronym I can’t remember) and that it is stationed at some site in the closed area. Be great to get a photo of that for the news and the people to see.”

The BLM established a “Threat Mitigation Unit” after the Bundy Ranch Standoff. And instead of getting demoted for going against the inter-agency threat assessment that clearly showed the Bundy family was not a threat, the Special Agent in Charge Dan Love got a promotion.

Wooten reveals, “In June of 2016, the BLM stood up the Threat Mitigation Unit (TMU) in response to a rise in threats against public land employees and their resources. The TMU mission was to provide strategic and operational support to the BLM, including threat analysis and mitigation strategies for the security and safety of BLM personnel, facilities, resources, visitors, and partners.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal ran an article spilling the beans titled BLM agent in charge during 2014 Bundy standoff gets new security job with the agency.

The article states: “The losing general at the ‘Battle of Bunkerville’ has been tapped to oversee security for U.S. Bureau of Land Management facilities nationwide.

As special agent in charge of Nevada and Utah, Dan Love made decisions about law enforcement tactics and security during the BLM 2014 standoff with rogue rancher Cliven Bundy in northeastern Clark County.

Now Love was to serve as the BLM special agent in charge of security and intelligence.

Wooten says in his document that he was concerned about “BLM ‘mission creep’ and the associated perception of the TMU (especially managed by this particular BLM SAC) to the public in reference to intelligence gathering on Constitutionally protected activities.”

He continues, “These intelligence type gathering activities were evidently controversial enough to be prohibited by other agencies to include the FBI and the BLM was operating outside of any approved policy on these activities.”

As it turns out, Wooten was right. Not long after the formation of this Threat Mitigation Unit, the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho began “monitoring jail calls between defendants and their wives […] without prosecutor or FBI consent for the apparent purpose of making fun of post arrest telephone calls between Idaho defendants/FBI targets.”

The Wooten document continues about how a “BLM ASAC described to me what amounted to a parabolic microphone covert/spy listening device and a bionic ear booster and amplifier.”

“The BLM ASAC indicated this old directional eavesdropping microphone and headset allowed for covert monitoring of individuals for compliance and law enforcement purposes in the field and around campsites and was purchased and used a good while ago by someone who had retired. I told the BLM ASAC that this activity would require a [warrant] since it is basically a search similar to a Title-III Wiretap since none of the parties in the conversation would have given consent, it seemed to me that the BLM ASAC didn’t understand this. It also seemed to me that although he has no doubt been trained and as a knowledge factor of his position, he should understand search, seizure and protected communications.”

By 2015, complaints about the conduct of Special Agent Dan Love reached a fever pitch within the Bureau of Land Management. Love’s questionable tactics at the Bundy Ranch Standoff and in earlier operations such as “Operation Cerberus Action,” which led to the suicide of a doctor named Jim Redd, began to raise eyebrows with many of his coworkers at BLM. Because of this, the OIG started several investigations into Love.

Wooten’s document says that Love was, “…directing subordinates to erase official government files in order to impede the efforts of rival civilian BLM employees in preparation for the ‘Burning Man’ Special Event, unlawfully removing evidence, bragging about the number of OIG and internal investigations on him and indicating that he is untouchable…”

In Wooten’s whistleblower document, several disturbing allegations say that Dan Love, “…committed fraud, waste and abuse and that he allegedly received kickbacks from the Burning Man organization, made unauthorized and wasteful expenditures, traveled unnecessarily and falsified his time and attendance. The complaint also alleged that the BLM SAC sought to abuse employees that do not agree with his actions. This case was assigned to the BLM OLES Director and determined to be unsubstantiated.”

Love’s questionable conduct regarding Burning Man included “ordering his subordinates to erase and otherwise destroy the records relating to the Burning Man Event in violation of Federal Records Laws in an effort to impede and obstruct the BLM Nevada State Office from being successful at managing the event once the BLM SAC was no longer in charge of it.”

The events at Burning Man eventually led to Love’s termination from the BLM.

It also seems this could have been the reason for an investigation into the Director of BLM’s Office of Law Enforcement and Security, William Woody, who found that allegations against Love were “unsubstantiated.”

Woody was removed from his post in 2018 following an ethics violation after the OIGl, concluded he was “using a government-owned vehicle without proper authorization.”

Wooten’s document says that Woody “favored” former Love, and when Wooten tried to lodge complaints about the conduct of Special Agent Love, he was “…informed by the BLM Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) Chief that any issues that had anything to do with a particular favored BLM SAC [Love], the BLM OLES Director [Woody] looked at himself instead of OPR. The OPR Chief told me he was shut out of those types of inquiries. […] I also noted that these types of issues I discovered apparently weren’t properly investigated as required. The bad joke I heard around the office was that the BLM SAC knew where the BLM OLES Director had buried the prostitutes body and that is why the BLM OLES Director protects him.”

Elsewhere, Wooten reveals that Love had, “…violated ethics rules in reference to the Nevada Burning Man Event in 2015 and a hiring process for a friend. The investigation also noted that it was reported that the ELM SAC stated that “he owned” the ELM OLES Director and as a result no action could be taken against him. The investigation further stated that it was reported the ELM SAC said that ‘You know, if you don’t side with me, grenades are going to go off and you’ll get hit’ and the ELM SAC bragged about ruining the reputation of a subordinate and indicated to another subordinate that the ELM SAC would ruin the career of that subordinate if she did anything against him.”

The new 252-page “Wooten-II” document reveals in that the trials against the Bundy family and their supporters in Nevada were based on lies, that the government “relied on factually incorrect talking points and on (or about) February 15, 2017, misrepresented the case facts about government snipers during the trial.”

One of those points is the fact that the FBI and BLM did have snipers training their weapons on civilians at the standoff, saying, “The investigation indicated that there was at least one school trained Federal Sniper equipped with a scoped/magnified optic bolt action precision rifle, another Federal Officer equipped with a scoped/magnified optic large frame (308 caliber) AR style rifle, and many officers that utilized magnified optics with long range graduated reticles (out to 1,000 meters-approximately 500 meters on issued rifles depending on environmental conditions) on standard law enforcement issued AR (223 caliber/5.56mm) and that often officers were in ‘over watch’ positions. Additionally, the investigation also indicated the possibility that the FBI and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department had law enforcement snipers/designated marksmen on hand for possible deployment.”

The document reveals that multiple agencies recommended against getting involved in a confrontation with the Bundy family, instead opting for a “soft impound” of the Bundy cattle, but that BLM OLES Director Woody stated, “by not taking strong and affirmative action we will just embolden those who are opposed to our actions and things will likely escalate.”

Following the lead of Woody, Love said in an email that “although a passive approach may have the desired effect, it may also be considered a sign of weakness or ordered constraint which may embolden one or more members of those we are confronting. That’s not the kind of message we want to send.”

Ultimately, the Wooten document paints a picture of a multi-agency criminal conspiracy to spy on law-abiding Americans and commit crimes and fraud in the courts.

  • Beautiful Creature

Deep into the night, the flickering candlelight cast eerie shadows across Jessica’s bedroom. A heavy silence engulfed the room as she knelt in fervent prayer, seeking solace and guidance from the divine. The moonlight spilled through the open window, casting a soft glow upon her tear-stained face.

A gentle breeze whispers through the room as Jessica pours her heart out to God. Startled, she turned her gaze toward the window, her eyes widening in astonishment.

Standing before her was an ethereal figure, a being of celestial beauty with shimmering wings unfurled. An angel had answered her prayers.

Awe-struck, Jessica approached the angel cautiously, feeling a sense of overwhelming peace radiating from its luminous presence. She spoke with reverence, pouring out her hopes and fears, seeking guidance from this heavenly messenger.

But as the conversation unfolded, an unsettling change crept over the angel’s countenance. Its eyes turned crimson, the celestial light fading into an unnerving darkness.

Jessica’s heart skipped a beat as she sensed a sinister energy emanating from the once-benevolent being. The angel lunged toward her before she could react, its form contorting and shifting in a grotesque display.

Feathery wings transformed into leathery membranes, and fangs elongated, gleaming with an insatiable hunger. The angel was not what it seemed, but a vampire in disguise.

Panic surged through Jessica’s veins, her pleas for salvation turning to desperate screams. The vampire’s icy grip closed around her, overpowering her feeble resistance.

With ruthless precision, the creature sank its razor-sharp fangs into her delicate neck, her lifeblood pouring forth in a crimson cascade.

As Jessica’s world dimmed, her pleas for mercy dissolved into agonized gurgles. The vampire fed voraciously, draining her of every last drop of life, reveling in the twisted ecstasy of her demise.

Her body slumped to the floor, devoid of the vibrant spirit that once resided within. The room fell into a chilling stillness, save for the haunting echoes of Jessica’s final breaths.

The vampire, satiated but still shrouded in malevolence, retreated into the night, leaving behind the lifeless shell of a woman who had sought solace in her faith.

  • Superman’s Sidekick

While patrolling Gotham City’s rooftops one evening, Batman stumbled upon a stolen AI prototype. Intrigued, he investigated its origin, and his detective skills led him to the Daily Planet newsroom in Metropolis.

Stealthily infiltrating the office, he discovered Clark Kent hunched over his computer, busily typing away at a lightning-fast pace. As Batman observed Kent’s superhuman speed in writing news articles, his mind raced with suspicion.

“Could it be? Is Superman secretly relying on AI to write his stories?”

Batman’s typically stoic face contorted into a mix of confusion and disbelief. He couldn’t fathom how Clark, the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, would rely on such a technology.

Determined to confront Kent, Batman stormed into the newsroom, cape billowing dramatically behind him.

“Clark! We need to talk,” he demanded, his gravelly voice filling the room.

Startled, Clark looked up from his computer, his glasses slightly askew.

    “Batman? What’s the matter?”

“I know your secret, Kent. You’re using AI to write news stories! How could you betray the values of journalism?”

Batman’s voice carried a mix of shock and amazement. Clark’s face broke into a wide grin.

“Relax, Batman! It’s not what you think. I’m not using AI to replace my reporting skills. It’s just a helpful tool to assist with data analysis and fact-checking.”

Batman’s stern expression softened as confusion gave way to curiosity.

“Data analysis and fact-checking? Well, that’s different. But I’m still watching you, Kent. No funny business.”

Clark chuckled, trying to ease Batman’s worries.

“Don’t worry, Batman. The AI platform is just a sidekick, not a replacement for good old-fashioned journalism. I’m still the one crafting the stories, seeking the truth, and fighting for justice.”

Batman, still skeptical but intrigued by Clark’s explanation, nodded curtly.

“You know, Kent, relying on AI in journalism seems like taking a shortcut. Real reporting requires hard work and dedication.”

“Oh, come on, Batman. Even you have gadgets and tools to assist you in crime-fighting. Think of it as my secret identity’s equivalent of your utility belt.”

“This is nothing compared to my Batmobile, Kent. It’s like comparing a bicycle to a supersonic jet.”

“Well, I suppose that’s one way to put it, Batman. But remember, even a bicycle can take you places if you know how to pedal.”

“True, but I prefer to arrive in style and make an entrance. Just like the Bat-signal lighting up the sky.”

“Oh, the Bat-signal. Very subtle, Batman. I prefer a more low-key approach, like slipping away into a phone booth and emerging as the Man of Steel.”

“How retro. You should try changing in an a cave sometime. Adds that extra dramatic flair.”

“Dramatic flair? Coming from the Dark Knight himself? You’re the master of theatricality, Batman. All those shadows and brooding expressions.”

“Brooding? I prefer to call it a necessary aura of intimidation. Keeps criminals on their toes.”

“Intimidation, huh? Maybe I should borrow some of that for my alter ego. Glasses and a stern look can only get you so far.”

“Believe me, Kent, the glasses are more effective than you think. People never suspect the bespectacled mild-mannered reporter.”

“Well, it seems we both have our unique methods, Batman. But let’s agree on one thing: We’re both committed to making the world a better place, in our own slightly different ways.”

“Agreed, Kent. As long as we keep fighting for justice, whether it’s through AI-assisted reporting or donning the cape and cowl, we’ll always find common ground.”

“That’s the spirit, Batman. We might approach things differently, but deep down, we’re allies in the pursuit of truth and making a difference.”

“Alright, but I’ve got my eyes on you, Kent. The day AI starts writing my crime reports is the day Gotham City falls into chaos!”

As Batman left the newsroom, Clark couldn’t help but chuckle, “Some people really know how to take the whole superhero thing to the next level, don’t they?”

“I heard that Kent,” Batman said as he waited for the elevator.

  • God and the Multiverse Time Question

The reconciliation of multiverse time concepts within the framework of the multiverse theory is a complex topic.

One approach to reconciling multiverse time concepts is through the framework of the “block universe” or “eternalism.” According to this viewpoint, all moments exist simultaneously, forming a static four-dimensional “block” of spacetime. In this perspective, the entire multiverse, encompassing all possible universes, exists within this block universe. Each universe represents a different configuration of matter and energy within the overarching fabric of spacetime.

Another aspect to consider is the concept of quantum superposition and branching. According to some interpretations of quantum mechanics, each quantum measurement leads to multiple parallel universes, branching out from the original universe. In this context, the multiverse comprises a collection of these parallel universes, each with its own timeline and set of events. Time within each universe progresses independently, following the laws of physics specific to that universe.

Cosmic inflation, a theory explaining the rapid expansion of the early universe, can also be linked to the multiverse concept. According to some models, regions of space can undergo inflationary expansion, resulting in the formation of “bubble universes.” These bubble universes would exist as distinct entities within the broader multiverse, each with its timeline and evolutionary history.

Reconciling multiverse time concepts involves understanding the interplay between these various perspectives and their implications for the nature of time and the relationship between different universes. It is important to note that this is an area of ongoing research, and definitive answers or a complete reconciliation may not yet be within our grasp.

The reconciliation of multiverse time concepts also raises profound philosophical questions regarding the nature of existence, causality, and the role of consciousness. Philosophers and scientists continue to explore these questions and strive for a comprehensive understanding that accounts for the intricate relationships between time, the multiverse, and our place within.

The role of God in the context of the multiverse theory is a matter of philosophical and theological interpretation. It is important to note that different religious traditions and belief systems may have varying perspectives.

From a religious standpoint, some individuals may view God as the ultimate creator and sustainer of the multiverse.

They might believe that God is the transcendent force or consciousness that governs all possible universes within the multiverse. In this perspective, God possesses oversight and control over the entire framework, including its various timelines and configurations.

Others may see the multiverse as an expression of God’s creativity, perceiving each universe as a unique manifestation of divine intention. From this perspective, God’s presence is intertwined with the existence and evolution of the multiverse, shaping its laws and guiding its unfolding.

  • Understanding God and Free Will

In exploring the nature of God’s foreknowledge and its implications for freedom of choice, I want to challenge our understanding by delving into the concept of timelessness. By examining the relationship between God’s perspective and the linear progression of time, I would like to reconcile divine omniscience with our free will.

The central issue is the potential conflict between God’s knowledge of the future and our freedom to act contrary to that foreknowledge. This dilemma arises from our perception that God exists within the same timeline as human beings but with the added ability to see ahead.

However, say God exists outside the confines of time, transcending the linear progression of the past, present, and future of our experience. In this notion, what we perceive as “tomorrow” is no different from what we perceive as “today” or “yesterday” to God.

It means that all moments are simultaneously present to God.

This concept of timelessness allows for a fresh interpretation of the relationship between God’s foreknowledge and our free will. So since God’s perspective is not in our timeline, His knowledge of our future actions does not restrict our ability to choose differently.

From God’s timeless vantage point, He comprehends our choices as one, encompassing the past, present, and future. Thus, we maintain our free will, even though God has a complete picture of those choices.

  • Self-Checkout

The rise of self-checkout systems in stores is a way to expedite the shopping process and reduce costs. But as I stand in line at yet another self-checkout kiosk, I can’t help but wonder: What has become of customer service?

The essence of customer service seems sacrificed on the altar of efficiency.

Gone are the days of being greeted by a human being who would assist me. Now I am left to fend for myself, facing a cold, impersonal machine that demands a single employee, their sole purpose reduced to monitoring for theft rather than serving customers.

Retailers have forgotten the value of a personal touch. They have forgotten customer loyalty, eagerly replacing the checkout clerk and register with soulless screens, eliminating jobs.

What about those who need help, like seniors, the technologically challenged, and those with disabilities? They are collateral damage in a race toward automation.

Sadly, as I stand in line waiting for the next available self-checkout screen, I long for the days when shopping was more than a transaction. When I could say “hi” and get a “hello” in return, at the very least, but now, I’m a faceless entity, scanning items and bagging them myself without any human connection.

As I pass my first item over the screen, I realize there are no plastic or paper bags to place my groceries in, and I forgot to bring my cloth bags.

  • Pronouns Appear to Ofuscate Suspect ID in Philly Shooting

Philadelphia police are investigating a mass shooting on Mon., Jul. 3, leaving five individuals dead, including a teenage boy, and two children wounded.

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw provided details of the incident, stating that law enforcement responded to gunfire in the area and eventually cornered the suspect in an alleyway. The 40-year-old suspect wore a bulletproof vest and carried an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun.

While the motive remains unknown, Outlaw added, “at this point, all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and target individuals”.

Before the investigation got started, President Joe Biden expressed his grief for the lives lost and his hopes for a future free from gun violence in a statement issued on Tue., Jul. 4. He called on Republican lawmakers to come to the table and support measures such as banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, implementing safe storage requirements, ending gun manufacturers immunity from liability, and enacting universal background checks.

One suspect wanted in connection with the shooting is 40-year-old Kimbrady Watson Carriker, a transgendered person, who was taken into custody on the same evening. Meanwhile, legacy media claims a person returned gunfire at the primary shooter, leading to their apprehension.

Carriker’s Facebook profile revealed posts expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement and following the Black Lives Matter Philly Facebook page. Additionally, Carriker’s Facebook activity included posts discussing the presence of evil spirits and an evaluation of an anti-violence grant program in Philadelphia.

It remains unclear by the non-committal language used by the police and the media if the 40-year-old shooter is Carriker or someone else.

  • How the Comstock’s Marlette Plan Created Tahoe’s Ski Industry

The discovery of the legendary Comstock Lode in Nevada in 1859 unleashed a frenzy of silver mining that shaped the region’s destiny. The silver deposit near Virginia City surpassed even the renowned California gold rush of 1849, attracting fortune seekers from far and wide, particularly neighboring California, in search of quick riches.

With the precious silver buried deep underground, mining operations required timber to support the intricate mine shafts. However, the arid state of Nevada lacked sufficient timber reserves, prompting mining companies to turn to the nearby Sierra mountains, with the pristine basin of Lake Tahoe just beyond its peaks.

Over two decades, the relentless pursuit of silver led to the depletion of the once lush greenery of the Tahoe Basin. Countless trees were felled, transformed into sizable timber pieces, and transported to the mines, descending to depths exceeding 3,000 feet below the surface.

Transporting logs and cutting timber from Lake Tahoe to the mines presented a challenge for loggers. Situated at 6,200 feet, Virginia City faced the daunting Carson Range, a mountain range running parallel to the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.

In this race to find the most efficient route, two established options emerged, each with its advocates, while a visionary plan offered a potentially revolutionary solution.

The first route, known as the Glenbrook-Carson City route, snaked its way from Glenbrook on the shores of Lake Tahoe to Carson City, reaching 7,146 feet. Logs harvested from the Tahoe Basin were floated or towed to Glenbrook, loaded onto horse-pulled wagons, and laboriously transported over the summit to Carson City and the nearby mines in Virginia City. The second route followed the Truckee River, the sole outlet of Lake Tahoe. This waterway meandered through towns like Truckee and Reno until it reached its final destination at Pyramid Lake.

Logs were floated along the lake shore, reaching the river inlet and continuing downstream to Truckee and Reno. They were then loaded onto wagons and transported to local mills or mines about 15 miles southeast.

A third alternative emerged amid the debate, the Marlette Plan.

Advocated by Nevada mining company financiers and engineers like Adolph Sutro and William Sharon, the audacious concept proposed a 4,000-foot tunnel be drilled from Marlette to Carson Valley in the Carson Range. The construction of this tunnel promised simplified log transportation, a significant reduction in timber costs, and the ability to meet the insatiable demand of the mines.

While logs from the Marlette region were already being fed down vertical chutes into Lake Tahoe, the Marlette Plan aimed to revolutionize the process, making them obsolete.

Each route and the Marlette Plan garnered financiers, advocates, workers, and promoters. Interestingly, logging camps near Marlette Lake became hotbeds of disputes and conflicts among those vying for control of the logs and seeking to exploit different routes and chutes.

California, apprehensive about the financial consequences, opposed the plan. Fearing the destruction of Lake Tahoe, the state sought to halt the scheme.

The third governor of California, John Bigler, formed a committee to investigate the Marlette Plan. They embarked on a fact-finding mission, visiting the Marlette Lake area and witnessing firsthand the scars etched into the mountainside.

However, during their visit, an unexpected revelation unfolded.

Sheriff Bull Johnson, a native of the Great Lakes and serving as the committee’s guide, revealed that the scars were not the result of logging operations but rather the result of “bear slides.” These natural slopes facilitated the descent of bears from the heights to the lake edge.

Following Nevada statehood, the proposed 4,000-foot tunnel from Marlette Lake to Carson Valley materialized, accompanied by the establishment of a log mill and a steep, cable-powered railway ascending the daunting slopes of the Carson Range.

The tunnel collapsed on April 18, 1906, during the Great San Francisco Earthquake that sent massive shockwaves rumbling through the Carson Range. By then, the borehole was pretty much disused and abandoned.

Today, the three cables, which once played a pivotal role in moving timber from the Tahoe basin, and now provide skiers a ride up the mountain side are known as the Bear Slides and seen by locals and visitors alike as it strikes a boundary between Nevada and California.
