Selected as the Eighth Judicial District Court’s next chief judge, Judge Tierra Jones term starts July 1.
Jones will succeed Chief Judge Jerry Wiese, who is stepping down after reaching the four-year term limit for the position. As chief judge, Jones will oversee court administration while continuing to carry a caseload.
Jones currently serves as the presiding judge of the criminal division, where she manages the homicide docket and maintains a demanding calendar of serious cases. She has served on the bench in Department 10 since May 22, 2017, following her appointment by then-Gov. Brian Sandoval. During her tenure, she has presided over both criminal and civil matters.
A graduate of the William S. Boyd School of Law, Jones earned her Juris Doctor in 2006. Before joining the bench, she worked as a law clerk for Judge Stewart L. Bell, gaining experience on both sides of the courtroom, working as a public defender and prosecutor.
Over her legal career, she has overseen 35 jury trials and has argued cases before the Nevada Supreme Court. Raised in Hawthorne, Jones is also the first African American woman to serve on Nevada’s District Court.
