A California man involved in a large-scale fraud ring targeting elderly victims has been found guilty after scamming a woman out of approximately $500,000, authorities announced.
Amit Bhanwala-Singh, 31, of Clovis, was convicted by a jury on charges of Exploitation of an Elderly Person and Attempt to Obtain Money Under False Pretense.
Bhanwala-Singh was part of a larger fraud operation that targeted elderly and vulnerable individuals through phone scams. Investigators said the victim, a 64-year-old woman in Truckee, was coerced into multiple cash and gold deliveries across Northern California and Nevada, losing nearly half a million dollars. The scammers impersonated U.S. Marshals and used intimidation tactics to isolate and control her.
Sentencing for Bhanwala-Singh is April 23, and he faces up to 30 years in prison. Co-defendant, Anil Kumar, 35, of Fresno, will stand trial on July 27.
Investigators arrested the men in May 2025 after attempting to collect a fake gold package worth over $213,000 from the Truckee victim.
