A water main break near USA Parkway and Innovation Way partially closed the roadway and prompted a boil water advisory for customers served by the TRI GID water system. According to the Storey County Sheriff’s Office, traffic reopened Wednesday morning with restrictions in place.
Vehicles are now traveling in both directions using the southbound lanes, with only one lane available in each direction, while the northbound lanes remain closed as crews continue repairs. Drivers in the area should expect delays, use caution, slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and allow extra travel time.
The break also caused a loss of pressure in the TRI GID water distribution system, leading health officials to issue a boil water advisory. Residents should boil tap water for at least three minutes before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or preparing food.
Officials explained that the pressure loss could allow backpressure or back-siphonage, potentially enabling water from outside the pipes to enter the system through cracks, breaks, or joints common in most distribution networks, which carries a risk of fecal contamination or other disease-causing organisms entering the water supply. The situation may pose a potential health risk until the system is fully repaired and tested.
The advisory will remain in effect until restoration of water pressure, and testing confirms that the water supply is safe for consumption.
