Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance and five Reno police officers were placed on leave Monday as a state-led investigation into potential misconduct within the department gets underway.
City officials announced the suspensions during a noon press conference at Reno City Hall. The investigation stems from allegations involving potential violations of City of Reno policies, though officials declined to disclose specific details.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety is conducting the independent investigation.
Mayor Hillary Schieve described the announcement as one of the most difficult moments of her 12 years in office, emphasizing the city’s decision to bring in an outside agency to maintain transparency and public trust.
Nance is on paid administrative leave. Authorities have not named the other five officers.
To ensure the department continues operating during the investigation, Reno has activated a mutual assistance agreement with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Darin Balaam will assist in overseeing operations while the review is ongoing.
The acting chief is expected to be announced later Monday and will work out of the Reno Police Department building. Nance was appointed Reno’s police chief in February 2023.
