The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating after two women were found dead inside a northern Carson City home Saturday evening following a welfare check.
Sheriff Ken Furlong stated deputies were dispatched at approximately 5:21 p.m. on February 28 to Merrill Road after concerned neighbors or acquaintances reported they had not seen or heard from the residents in about two weeks.
When deputies arrived, they entered the residence and discovered two deceased women inside. Both were in advanced stages of decomposition, consistent with reports that they had not been in contact for an extended period.
Detectives and coroner’s personnel responded to the scene and processed the home through the night. By early Sunday morning, investigators had identified the women as an 89-year-old resident and a woman believed to be approximately 60 years old.
Authorities said both appeared to have been dead for at least two weeks.
Preliminary information indicates the younger woman was the daughter and caretaker of the 89-year-old, who was reportedly suffering from severe, terminal health issues.
Investigators reported no signs of unexpected trauma on the older woman’s body. However, the 60-year-old woman appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound, and a firearm was near the victims inside the home.
Both bodies are at the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office, where autopsies will determine the official cause and manner of death.
