Criminal proceedings remain suspended in the case against a man accused of intentionally driving his truck into a group of children and parents outside a Truckee Safeway earlier this month.
According to the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office, defendant Jonathan Maurer appeared in court Feb. 25 for entry of plea related to the Feb. 7 incident. Maurer faces eight counts of attempted murder, multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and several sentencing enhancements, including allegations of great bodily injury and prior criminal history.
During the hearing, the court declared a doubt as to Maurer’s competency pursuant to California Penal Code section 1368. The court then ordered a competency evaluation in accordance with state law.
Maurer remains in custody.
The District Attorney’s Office stated it will continue to provide updates as the case proceeds and will support victims and their families throughout the adjudication process. The office also said it is available to answer questions from the public.
Authorities charge Maurer, saying he intentionally drove his truck into members of the Tahoe Titans youth baseball team and their parents as they held a fundraiser outside the Safeway on Donner Pass Road shortly before 3 p.m. on Feb. 7.
Four people, including two children, ended up going to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said the victims were later released.
Prosecutors allege Maurer struck three mothers and four boys. The charges include eight counts of attempted murder, along with enhancements tied to alleged great bodily injury and prior criminal history.
Authorities have said there is no known connection between Maurer and the victims.
