Authorities found no threat after reports of a chemical smell causing throat irritation at a downtown Reno apartment complex Monday night.
Residents on the fourth floor of the Truckee River Terrace Apartments reported a strong odor in the hallways that was irritating their throats, prompting officials to ask people on the fourth and fifth floors to shelter in place, according to a Reno Fire Department spokesperson.
Fire crews who entered the building also experienced throat irritation. Investigators determined that a resident on the fourth floor had been making chemicals in their room. But no illegal substances could be found.
Officials noted that a recent fire in the fourth-floor laundry room may have contributed to the odor, as materials used in cleanup could have produced lingering fumes.
There were no injuries, and authorities said there was no threat to residents. The building’s management ventilated the affected floors.
