Second Suspect Arrested in 2023 Reno Shooting

Reno Police have arrested a second suspect in connection with a 2023 shooting at a northwest Reno apartment complex that left seven people injured, including three juveniles.

Police said 20-year-old Chemarion Cooks was taken into custody Thursday near South Los Altos Parkway and Vista Boulevard in Sparks.

Cooks faces seven counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, five counts of battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, one count of child abuse with a deadly weapon, and one count of discharging a firearm into a structure.

The charges stem from an Oct. 6, 2023, shooting at the Zephyr Pointe Apartments on North McCarran Boulevard near West Seventh Street. Officers responded around 10:45 p.m. after reports of gunfire.

When police arrived, they found seven victims suffering from gunshot wounds, four adults and three teenagers. Reno Fire Department and REMSA crews provided emergency medical aid before all seven headed to the hospital.

In December 2024, more than a year after the incident, officers arrested 19-year-old Frank Hewitt in connection with the case. Hewitt, who was already in custody on an unrelated shooting charge, faces seven counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, multiple battery charges, three counts of child abuse with a deadly weapon, and one count of shooting into an occupied dwelling.
