The Washoe County School District (WCSD) has released attendance data showing a significant increase in student absences on Friday, Jan. 30, the same day students across the district organized walkouts to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforcement.
According to district figures, absence rates rose sharply at middle and high schools, while elementary attendance remained stable.
WCSD reported that middle school absences increased by 29 percentage points, climbing from about 4% on a typical Friday, Jan. 23, to 33% on Jan. 30. High school absences rose by 30 percentage points, from 16% to 46% over the same period. Elementary school absences showed only a slight increase, from roughly 2% to 3%.
District-wide, nearly one in four students scheduled for afternoon classes were given unverified absences on Jan. 30, compared with a typical rate of 6% to 7% on other Fridays.
