Spanish Springs High School Lockdown, Separate School Bus Crash

Spanish Springs High School resumed normal operations Thursday morning after a brief lockdown that school officials later confirmed was triggered by a technical error.

The Washoe County School District (WCSD) first announced the lockdown on its website at 9:23 a.m. The lockdown was lifted just before 10 a.m., according to the district.

WCSD initially did not provide a reason for the lockdown, stating only that WCSD Police were on site and investigating. Later, school officials clarified that the lockdown was precautionary and not related to an actual threat.

In a message sent to families, Spanish Springs High School Principal Sean Hall stated inaccurate information had been broadcast to students earlier in the day after a lockdown alarm was activated mistakenly due to a technical malfunction. As a result, administrators initiated a lockdown out of an abundance of caution.

After reviewing the situation, officials determined there was no emergency on campus. Teaching and learning resumed shortly thereafter, and all students and staff were safe throughout the incident.

“Once again, there was no emergency on our campus today,” Hall said, adding that the school is investigating what caused the alarm system error.

While the lockdown was brief, officials acknowledged it caused understandable concern among students, staff, and families. Administrators thanked the school community for its patience and emphasized that student safety remains the top priority.

Separately, WCSD reported that one of its school buses was involved in a crash with a passenger vehicle on Thursday morning in Sparks.

The crash occurred around 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Wingfield Springs Road and Silverton Way. Several students were on the bus at the time, but no injuries were reported, according to the district.

District officials said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
