A hiker was found dead Monday on Mount Whitney after becoming separated from a companion during an overnight climb, according to authorities.
Inyo County Search and Rescue said two hikers began their ascent around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The pair continued climbing into Sunday before parting ways at approximately 3:30 p.m. near the 12,500-foot elevation mark. At that point, one hiker decided to turn back, while the other continued toward the summit.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office received the call after the person failed to return on Monday morning. Search and rescue crews began searching the area along the Mountaineers Route, a steep and technical path frequently used by experienced climbers.
Crews found the hiker on the north face of Mount Whitney, below the Final 400 section of the route. Authorities confirmed the person was deceased.
No cause of death was released. The identity of the hiker will be released, pending notification of next of kin.
Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, poses significant hazards due to elevation, weather, and technical terrain.
