WINNEMUCCA, Nev. — A one-year-old child is recovering after ingesting fentanyl and becoming unresponsive Tuesday evening in Winnemucca, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 call around 5:45 p.m. on December 23 reporting that the child was not breathing after being exposed to fentanyl. Detectives with the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team (Tri-DENT) arrived at the apartment complex within about one minute of the call.
Tri-DENT includes personnel from the Nevada State Police Investigation Division, Winnemucca Police Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, and Lander County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said a man met officers at the scene carrying the unresponsive child and reported the fentanyl ingestion. Detectives quickly assessed the child and administered intranasal Naloxone while beginning CPR.
When there was no response, the child received a second dose of the drug. The child then started breathing on their own.
Additional law enforcement officers and emergency medical crews arrived shortly afterward. The child went to the hospital for further treatment. Officials have not released the child’s current condition.
During the response, authorities said the child’s mother left the apartment complex in a vehicle and was later involved in a crash with a commercial vehicle on Interstate 80 west of Winnemucca. That crash remains under investigation.
The Winnemucca Police Department is leading the investigation.
