Oily Sheen, Odor Appears Along Marina Canal

SPARKS, Nev. (Dec. 26, 2025) — Residents living along the Sparks Marina canal are raising concerns after waking up this week to a strong odor and an oily sheen on the water following recent rain.

The sheen was spotted along the east side of the Sparks Marina canal, where residents also reported seeing a dead bird floating in the slick. Several neighbors say they are worried the runoff could contain harmful contaminants. By Wednesday, the smell in the area had intensified.

City officials say the odor and oily appearance are the result of stormwater runoff from Sparks streets flowing into the marina system. According to city staff, a mild winter allowed debris, oils, and residue to gather on roadways, which emptied into the canal during this week’s rainstorm.

Despite the visible sheen and smell, city officials say they are not overly concerned. The city estimates that approximately 2 million gallons of stormwater runoff enter the Sparks Marina system each day. Officials say the water receives treatment before continuing downstream to the Truckee River.

Odor complaints along the Sparks Marina canal are not uncommon. Last summer, residents reported similar issues involving trash buildup and persistent smells near canal-side homes. At that time, city officials attributed the problem to heavy rainstorms that washed debris into the waterway.

Regarding the dead bird, the city said there is no indication that contamination levels in the water were high enough to have caused the animal’s death.

City crews will continue running aerators and pumps in the canal to keep water moving and help reduce odors.
